Hulu has decided not to move forward with their Buffy the Vampire Slayer remake, Buffy: New Sunnydale. The remake would have seen an older Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) teaming up with young slayer Nova (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). The showrunners began production last August and achieved a “not perfect pilot.” In the end, after considering reworking it, they decided to scrap the project. Geller shared an Instagram post announcing the cancellation and thanking executive producer Chloé Zhao for the chance to be back in Buffy’s “stylish, yet affordable boots.” She added, “And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded of how much I love her, and how much she means. not only to me, but to all of you. This doesn’t change any of that.” Geller signed off her post saying, “If the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
While New Sunnydale may be off the table, that doesn’t mean that audiences will never get another look at Buffy’s world. Hulu is interested in Buffy as an IP and may “regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise,” according to reports by Deadline. In the meantime, The X-Files is on track to a new series from Ryan Coogler, and there’s talk of a potential Firefly continuation.
