Firefly fans have been teased for over a week now, incessantly, by Nathan Fillion as he recorded himself going door to door of his former co-stars and cryptically saying, “It’s time.”

The truth was revealed yesterday at Awesome Con.

Firefly is coming back, sort of.

The crew is back. It will be a show.

This time, it’ll be animated, though.

It makes sense. It’s been over 20 years since the one-season wonder was canceled and a straight-to-video movie was released. Since then, it has remained one of the most-requested shows to be rebooted and often tops people’s lists of shows that ended too soon.

The show, which stars Nathan Fillion as captain of the Serenity, Mal Reynolds, as he and his crew try to make their way through “the Verse” through less than legal means. He and his crew are no fans of the system government, the Alliance, which is made up of mostly former rebellion fighters and mercenaries. They have every reason not to trust the government, as one of the crew is a clairvoyant and genius woman named River, who was rescued from government experimentation by her brother Simon.

It’s draw was the show’s interesting mix of characters and blending of Westerns and Science Fiction themes. Sadly, it only lasted for one season before it was taken off the air. Since then, it has gained a cult following, and fans have long waited for some sort of revival.

The show was created by Joss Whedon, but he will have no involvement with said revival. There is already a script completed, and showrunners have been secured with the talent of Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters. Award-winning animation studio Shadow Machine has released concept art for the show, and by Fillion’s revelation, it will take place between the end of season one of the show and the 2005 movie Serenity.

The crew looks to be reprising all of their roles as voice actors for the upcoming show. There is no indication yet whether Shepherd Book, the preacher with a secret past, will be part of the show, who was played by Ron Glass. Sadly, Glass passed away in 2016. Likely, someone will be tasked with filling in for his role.

The complete package for the show is expected to be shopped around for a home soon.
