AI Plays Possible Role In Hundreds Of Layoffs At Disney

Another round of layoffs has hit at Disney this past Tuesday, with the likelihood of more layoffs down the road and there has been some speculation that the company’s adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) may potentially be playing a role. The entertainment giant’s newest CEO, Josh D’Amaro, hit the ground running on employee reductions shortly after starting his tenure at Disney, with the quick elimination of 1,000 jobs.
These job cuts occurred mostly in the unified marketing organization, studios, and TV business, ESPN, as well as products and technology. Additional reductions have been made in July to some corporate functions, Disney Entertainment Television and film studios, with Pixar and National Geographic suffering the most reductions.
The layoffs have come amid D’Amaro’s efforts to make Disney a leaner organization, with investments increasing in areas it considers strategic. In a report to shareholders in August, D’Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston, wrote that they were “mid-stream” in its cost reduction efforts, with more updates to come.
Disney’s chief legal and global affairs officer, Horacio Gutierrez, told employees in a memo that the company was undergoing a “transformational process” that will require “hard choices.” While the memo did not explicitly mention AI, Disney is pushing to automate corporate work and increasingly treating AI in a way that will change staffing in corporate functions.
