“Goodbye Whoniverse. God, that was fun!” In an excerpt from his memoir, Welsh writer Russell T Davies reflected on his return to Doctor Who. He spoke a bit about Ncuti Gatwa’s exit, how saving a baby turned into the perfect bookend for his tenure. How when the Doctor regenerated, that was to be it. Disney+ was in limbo on the Doctor, and it would have been a nightmare, “but I would have managed it.” The regeneration was intended to be open-ended, but then he thought, "Think of children watching that. It’s like a death. We can’t do that to them.”

That’s when Billie Piper was brought in to give the viewers something to talk about. The Christmas special was also brought up; he had a plan, but time and energy weren’t really there, so it largely dissipated. Though uncertain about the future, he was optimistic: “The show has been set free. The future can be planned by a brand-new team. Clean and bold and bright.” That seems to be the end of another era, one which seemed to speed by. Still, one should always be on the lookout for the unexpected. With that, we shall be returning to our proper place in time and space.
