Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI (the company that developed ChatGPT), made the switch to Microsoft after being fired from the previous company. Former OpenAI president Greg Brockman and several colleagues will follow Altman to the new company.

Despite the apparent competition between the companies, Microsoft plans to retain its exclusive relationship with OpenAI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella claimed, “We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite and in continuing to support our customers and partner.” To fill the gap left by Altman’s departure, OpenAI hired former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as interim CEO.

More shake-ups in the AI world could still come, as Altman and Brockman said they would be willing to return to OpenAI if the board members that fired them resigned.

Regardless of where they end up, Altman remains committed to the OpenAI technology. In a post on X, he wrote, “Satya [Nadella] and my top priority remains to ensure OpenAI continues to thrive. We are committed to fully providing continuity of operations to our partners and customers. The OpenAI/Microsoft partnership makes this very doable.”
