Microsoft has announced that they will be continuing their collaboration with OpenAI, an artificial intelligence lab. This deal will be a multiyear/multibillion-dollar investment between the two. Microsoft invested in OpenAI in 2019 and again in 2021. Microsoft Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella said that the “partnership with OpenAI [is] around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform.” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI shared Nadella’s sentiment, stating that “Microsoft shares our values, and we are excited to continue our independent research and work toward creating advanced AI that benefits everyone.” While OpenAI innovates artificial intelligence technology Microsoft will provide the infrastructure to support it through their cloud system, Azure.

The exact dollar amount of the investment is yet to be officially released; however, the New York Times reports that it is about $10 billion. The AI chatbots will have the capacity to generate text, images, and other media in response to short prompts. IBM defines a chatbot as a “computer program that uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to understand customer questions and automate responses to them simulating human conversation.” There are a few chatbot programs to be aware of. ChatGPT is a program that can answer questions in a clear, well-punctuated format. ChatGPT can assist users in completing a variety of tasks. For example, rather than needing to know the specifics of how to make a PowerPoint presentation, a user would only need to know what types of questions to pose for the AI to create one for them.  The DALL-E 2 program can generate images based on verbal descriptions of what a user wants to see, while the program, GPT-3 is a system that can write, argue, and even generate code.

It is worth noting that the longer an AI program is in use the stronger the responses can become as the system builds on prior knowledge learning resulting in evolving the algorithms utilized in interpreting responses. OpenAI asserts that the artificial intelligence program can “answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.” The influence of these advances will be seen and felt across the board from the workplace to personal use. This has been an ever-prevalent advance in the world of gaming for quite some time.
