Rebecca Yarros announced on her Instagram account on Wednesday 1st November that Amazon MGM Studios has optioned her smash hit Empyrean novels with hopes of making a fantasy series. The streaming service has bought the rights to Iron Flame and Fourth Wing, and the second book isn’t even out yet. Xaden is coming to live-action!

Fourth Wing gained notoriety on TikTok and soon became one of the best-selling books of the year. Rebecca Yarros’ novel captured fan’s imagination with its combination of tropes, angst, and snarky dragons. Iron Flame has already broken records, becoming Waterstones fastest selling pre-order title. It’s no wonder Amazon snagged the author before Netflix or HBO tried to sign the Booktok favorite.

As of yet, there’s no word on who will play the title roles. The casting will be even more crucial than normal, as the main character, Violet is an Ehlers-Danlos syndrome sufferer and will have to portray the disease on screen whilst riding a dragon. There are few fantasy series with disabled main characters, so let’s hope that Amazon makes it a flagship project and funds it appropriately. No one wants to watch bad CGI dragons.

Amazon will be looking to compete with Hulu who have reportedly bought Sarah Jane Maas’ A Crown of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) for adaptation to the small screen. Although the announcement was made two years ago, the project is reportedly still in development.

Iron Flame, the next installment in the Empyrean series will be released in bookstores on November 7th, 2023
