Another animated fairy tale world is making its way to live-action, but it’s not one from the Mouse. Deadline is reporting that a live-action remake of the 1992 animated film FernGully is in the early stages of development at Amazon-MGM, with Marielle Heller set to direct.
Starting her career as an actress on stage and screen, Marielle Heller has built an interesting career as a director. She made her directorial debut with the 2015 comic book film, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, starring Bel Powely, Kristen Wiig, and Alexander Skarsgård. In 2018, she directed the drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?, starring Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant, both of whom earned Oscar nominations for their performances.
In 2019, Heller directed A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which earned Tom Hanks an Oscar nomination for his performance as Fred Rogers. Heller’s most recent film, Nightbitch, earned Amy Adams a Golden Globe nomination. In addition to the FernGully remake, Heller is developing The Comebacker, a baseball drama starring Tom Hanks. The film was the subject of a massive bidding war, which Sony Pictures won a few days ago. Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner Colman Domingo and Grammy-winning superstar Bad Bunny are circling roles.
