Every now and again in horror, you’ll go digging and find a really great gem that you wonder why more people don’t know about. For every Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween, there is an Oculus and a Hush. 2006’s Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is one such film.
A rather unique take on the slasher genre, the film is largely shot in a documentary style by a film crew following the titular Leslie Vernon as he works to become a slasher icon like Freddy, Jason and Michael, who are all real people in the universe. The story takes several twists and turns, deconstructs the slasher genre in a way even Scream didn’t, and is just an overall love letter to the blood-soaked films that many horror fans have come to love. The ending of the first hinted at a sequel, but we never heard about one. Until now.
At a 20th anniversary screening of the original film at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown LA, the original director and writer, Scott Glosserman and David J. Stieve, respectively, confirmed that after two decades, Leslie Vernon is returning to slash his way through more unfortunate people. Stars Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, and Robert Englund all return to reprise their roles as well, so that should be a delight. A Kickstarter has been started to raise money for the sequel, with the filmmakers promising a bigger and better movie the more money they raise.
The movie is expected sometime in 2027.
