CinemaCon proved to be a massive event for Star Wars fans as Jon Favreau headlined the creative community luncheon and debuted the first 17 minutes of the next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, for those in attendance. Favreau answered questions during a conversation hosted by Matt Belloni, in which the creator of The Mandalorian highlighted the filmmaking techniques he used to make the movie feel as cinematic as possible. From stop-motion technology to massive, practical sets, it is clear that Favreau understood that he needed to go the extra mile to get fans of the show to leave their homes.

He also shared his own childhood memories of seeing A New Hope for the first time with his dad, and recounted his hopes of replicating that success with a new generation of Star Wars fans. Later in the evening, Disney presented its upcoming slate of films, including The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The opening act reveals that Din Djarin and Grogu haven’t been lounging around their Nevarro homestead. Instead, the duo lives a very active life, embarking on high-stakes missions on distant worlds and trying to capture high-profile bounties. Meanwhile, the looming threat posed by the Imperial Remnant is immediately emphasized, with Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward seeking Din Djarin’s help against an especially elusive target. The first few minutes of the movie are described as “impressive,” and everything isset to Ludwig Göransson’s heart-pounding original score. There’s also plenty of Zeb Orrelios in the movie’s opening act. Most of the footage from the first act includes scenes fans have already seen in the three official trailers, so what happens in the rest of the movie is being kept firmly under wraps. The Mandalorian and Grogu’s final official trailer was released online yesterday during Disney’s CinemaCon presentation, and tickets went on sale today. The film will hit theaters worldwide on May 22.
