Apple’s long-time CEO, Tim Cook, is set to leave the position in September. He will become executive chairman of the board, and will be replaced by John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering. This decision was unanimously approved by the board, after what is described by them as “a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.” Cook has stated that, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company. I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world.”
Tim Cook had joined Apple in March 1998, where he eventually rose to become COO and head of the Macintosh division. He would be promoted to CEO in August 2011, replacing co-founder Steve Jobs, who died soon afterwards. Under Cook, Apple launched Apple Music and Apple TV, alongside other products and services. It remains to be seen what Apple’s future will be.
