Back in 2017, the most divisive movie in the Star Wars Universe to date was released. The Last Jedi seemed to almost go out of its way to try to subvert expectations at every turn between typical Star Wars tropes going awry at the last second or potential storylines that began in The Force Awakens being abruptly ended or shut down. One of the biggest standouts in this category was the unexpected death of Grand Master Snoke at the hands of his apprentice Kylo Ren.

The actor who played him, Andy Serkis, has weighed in on his reaction to finding out his character’s fate. In a recent interview with GQ, Serkis had this to say, Andy Serkis Said He Was 'Devastated' When He Learned Snoke's Fate In 'The Last Jedi'

Let me just phrase it like this. When I went in to read The Last Jedi, [I spent] the first 30 pages thinking, ‘This is the most incredible character.’ Then I turned the page: ‘And then Snoke gets sliced in half.’ And I was gutted. Gutted.

Clearly, he was just as surprised as the rest of us to learn the fate of his character. It almost felt anti-climactic because of how unexpected it was since he was in the first movie so little and there had been no one else set up to take his place in the final movie. It was particularly surprising in light of the revelation that Snoke was actually a clone of the powerful Emperor Palpatine that he could be fooled so easily by the movements of the force. This was not the first time Serkis had commented on the role. Back in 2021, he told io9,

I was devastated when I read that script because it was all going so well. I was like, ‘Man, this is a boss character. I’m going to love playing... what!? You’re kidding me, what?’ I was like ‘Okay, is a good idea?’

In light of these quotes, we can tell that Serkis imagined the arc of his character ending differently. If you were shocked at the way that Snoke was handled, then the actor that played him is with you.

The Last Jedi will likely continue to be hotly debated as a movie and it seems that because of it, we will not be seeing any more of Andy Serkis’s Snoke. However, for better or worse, that is what we thought about Palpatine as well.
