According to a new report by Deadline, Sony is engaged in early development on an animated film focusing on Spider-Punk. The project is supposedly being co-written by Daniel Kaluuya and Ajon Singh.

There are currently no other details on plot or casting at this time, though Kaluuya reprising his role of Spider-Punk from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse makes the most sense. The character originates in 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10, and comes from Earth-138, where he is a force for anti-establishment attitudes with a focus on taking down corrupt systems. His adaptation into the multiverse of Across the Spider-Verse was praised, with many enjoying the character’s attitude and design.

It is currently unclear if this supposed new film will serve as a direct tie-in to some element of the planned animated Spider-Man trilogy, set to continue in 2027 with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, or will instead serve as a stop-gap given that the third film in the trilogy has been delayed several times. This could end up being a situation similar to that of Star Wars, where existing plans for films are flexible and ever-changing as other projects crystalize faster than expected, and so get moved ahead of other films in the pipeline.

But, it may also be that this project never sees the light of day, given that it is only in early development, and projects get cancelled all the time at that stage. We’ll have to wait and find out if Spider-Punk gets his spotlight or if he’ll continue to be part of an ensemble within the Spider-Man animated trilogy.
