Hot off the heels of the successful $80 million earnings so far of the summer flick Barbie, director Greta Gerwig has confirmed that she has signed on to direct two movies based on the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis on Netflix. Along with Barbie, Gerwig has also written and acted in indie films before making her big-budget debut directing the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019), which is also a book adaptation. Netflix acquired the rights to the Chronicles of Narnia series back in 2018, but until now, there was only speculation and rumors as to how the streaming giant was going to portray the beloved classic children’s series.

At the time of the acquisition, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said, “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”But, in the five years since that time, there was no other word as to what the Narnia project(s) would look like, and even with this announcement, there has been no official word on which two books will be adapted into movies, leading to much fan speculation on the internet. There is also no official word on a timeline for release dates either.
