Netflix's 'Pokémon' Show Is Supposed To Be A Breathe Of Fresh Air For Fans

As fans await the December 2023 release of Pokémon Concierge from Netflix, the show’s lead actress, Rena Nōnen, known as Non, took some time to discuss what it was like to work on a stop-motion anime series and how the animation style will make fans wanting a real-life experience. Pokémon Concierge follows the escapades of Haru, a young girl working as a concierge at a resort hosting Pokémon and their trainers. 

Non explained during a press event at Anime Expo 2023, she explained how the upcoming series how will tackle expansive human issues. “I’m sure we’ve all [felt like] we are bombarded, under pressure, or that we don’t want to get up and keep doing what we’ve been doing and just give up. But when you see Pokémon Concierge, it’s really therapeutic, and it makes you want to try and be the best you can be.”

The stop-motion animation aspect of the show, Non hopes fans will find unique to the Pokémon work. While recording voice lines for Haru, Non pantomimed her character's frustration to the point where her facial expressions and mannerisms could be utilized to capture the performance.

“Once I saw the finished scenes, they were very different from what you’d see in 2D, 3D, or CG animation. I was able to feel like ‘Oh, [stop motion] is also how you can enjoy Pokémon.”

Pokémon Concierge debuts on Netflix in December 2023.
