A long-lasting franchise like Star Wars holds many secrets and hidden facts about its world. Among the books that expand its characters’ lore, fans can learn about the names and faces behind the screen—the creative forces behind the films and television shows. One surprising fact about the Star Wars legacy is that “Disney’s first entry into the galaxy far, far away” almost had a different director, or captain of sorts, behind the camera: Ben Affleck. The famed actor, screenwriter, and director sat with Josh Horowitz on Horowitz’s Happy, Sad, Confused show and revealed, “They came to me and asked me, hey, are you interested in this…they weren’t also talking to JJ or other people…” Given this knowledge, it’s easy to wonder what the newest Star Wars trilogy might have looked like had Affleck accepted the offer.

According to Comicbook.com, Affleck stated he’s a fan of the franchise, but being a fan didn’t make him the right person to handle the project. Rather than taking on a project with a passionate and vocal fanbase and “reinventing” it, Affleck concluded that “Someone else who has more passion [to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens] is going to do a better job.” Given the fanbase’s disdain towards George Lucas for selling his franchise to Disney, whoever was going to take the helm and become the director was going to “receive serious backlash.” Ben Affleck made a smart and safe choice in turning down the offer.
