On Tuesday, talks between Nickelodeon Studios and the Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839) closed with an agreement to increase wages and staffing requirements, amongst other details. Candice Stephenson, a negotiations committee member, disclosed in a statement that “This contract is the direct result of not only a strong public showing of solidarity among our members but also demonstrates the power of what multiple crafts working together can do.”

The negotiating committee announced that the agreement was a “milestone” that included increased bereavement time, staffing requirements, supervisory roles, and an additional 15% compensation increase to storyboard artists who also handle writing duties.

“We were able to get the company to voluntarily recognize animation production before negotiations and include production workers for the first time. The committee stood strong on all of our priority issues and helped deliver a groundbreaking agreement,” said Steve Kaplan, a representative for the Animation Guild.

This contract ratification comes after close to six months after the Nickelodeon Animation editors secured a new agreement with the Motion Picture Editors Guild (IATSE Local 700) in September. The vote was approved unanimously. Guild leader Cathy Repola said, “Witnessing this kind of solidarity throughout this challenging process was awe-inspiring.”  The deal included an increase between 9% to as much as 70% over the next twelve months.
