“Billy Dee Williams has had a fascinating life and career,” says People editor Victoria Wilson, on which the Star Wars actor shared the front cover of his memoirs, What Have We Here? “The book he writes is fun and, like Billy, hard to resist and draws you in.” Billy Dee Williams’s upcoming book gives us all a look at his nearly eighty-year-long career, from his childhood work on Broadway to his early film work, to landing the role of Lando Calrissian. On his thoughts on the writing process, Williams said, “I saw how absurd my life has been at times. And how fortunate it's been. “I had fun reliving those memories. I hope it brings back memories for readers, too.”

What Have We Here? will be published next year by Knopf, and will also focus on Williams’s other roles such as Gale Sayer in Brian’s Song, an acclaimed 1971 film about Chicago Bears player Brian Piccolo, played by James Caan, and his battle with cancer. These memoirs could give Star Wars fans a glimpse into Williams’s career that they never knew about, though of course, these memoirs should also offer a glimpse into the role of Lando as well.

Billy Dee Williams also cited director Paul Muni for helping his career, by casting him in The Last Angry Man and telling him he could play anything he wanted, “no matter the way you look or the color of your skin.” Williams took these words to heart and pursued his career. Reflecting on his career, he noted, “I saw how many times throughout my life I wanted to go right and some force in the universe caused me to turn left instead, and things worked out.” What Have We Here? will be published on February 13, 2024, and will likely be available through bookstores and online retailers.
