An influx of content from Disney has been pumped out and promoted as of late. At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, current Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company will reexamine things moving forward. This encompasses all aspects of the company, from princess-centered and animal-themed content to Marvel and Star Wars titles.

In a market saturated with many choices and streaming service-exclusive productions, you need to make yourself the ideal. But, Iger asked, “You know, there’s so much consumer choice right now, and it comes back to, what is differentiated?” He acknowledged that they have many brands under their belt but pointed out that “quality is also a differentiator.”

The company had decent success with a fair few of its Star Wars movies, but Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed a bit in comparison. “It gave us pause just to think maybe the cadence was a little too aggressive. And so we decided to pull back a bit.” The recent news regarding possible future Star Wars movies definitely backs that statement up. Iger confirmed that they are “still developing Star Wars films,” making sure that “it’s the right one” when it happens.

In terms of Marvel content, there has been quite a bit; the question of fatigue has risen lately. Iger has taken a different approach to the topic, stating, “What we have to look at at Marvel is not necessarily the volume of Marvel storytelling, but how many times we go back to the well on certain characters.” He is aware of the strengths and weaknesses, “Sequels typically work well for us, but do you need a third or a fourth, for instance? Or is it time to turn to other characters?… I think we just have to look at what characters and stories we are mining.”

The future will surely be interesting no matter what. Time will tell with the outcome of Iger’s thoughts and plans for the company, and it’s clear that serious thought is being put into the franchises overall.
