Disney Announces New 'Toy Story', 'Zootopia', And 'Frozen' Sequels Are Heading Parents’ Way

It was time for Disney’s year-end company earnings call on Wednesday, where the company broke the news of layoffs of about 7,000 and the loss of 2.4 million Disney+ subscribers (though North America actually gained 200,000). Even a sale of Hulu is apparently on the table. Amidst these grim statements, CEO Bob Iger announced three sequels: a fifth Toy Story film, a third Frozen film, and, nearly seven years after the original film’s release, a Zootopia sequel.

Following questionable marketing decisions that led to very disappointing box office results for Lightyear and Strange World, let alone diverting Turning Red straight to Disney+ and away from theaters entirely, these moves are sure to get audiences back in theaters. How long any of these films have been in development is unknown. The previous sequels, released in June and November 2019 and each making over a billion dollars, were announced in November 2014 and March 2015 respectively. No release dates for these latest sequels were provided, so it could be more than a couple of years before the new films are actually seen; they might not be as close to Inside Out 2, which already has a release date set for next year.

Toy Story and Frozen also have their shorts and TV specials as part of their franchises, with a TV series for the former, a Broadway musical shuttered by COVID for the latter, and Disney On Ice presences for both. Zootopia only recently built momentum with the Zootopia+ series last year. Kristen Bell, you got your wish.
