'Star Wars' VFX Professionals Approve Union Membership With IATSE

A major milestone has been reached for a collective of visual effects (VFX) artists involved with a variety of Star Wars projects. According to Deadline, this collective is now organized with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the union that represents creative and technical professionals in the entertainment industry. The collective of VFX artists has worked on projects such as The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), the Disney+ series Ahsoka, and the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter (2027). The group is reportedly bargaining over its first contract, though no related projects have been named at this time.
IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb commented on the group’s decision to be represented by the Union, “These workers help bring some of the most ambitious stories in entertainment to life, and they deserve a meaningful voice in shaping their working conditions. We are proud to welcome these visual effects professionals into our proud Union.” This is one step toward the increase of Union participation and representation in the entertainment industry as a whole. At this time, IATSE represents over 168,000 workers across Canada, the United States of America, and its territories, with over 360 local offices across the covered areas. A wide variety of crafts are covered under the Union, including stage productions, film and television projects, and trade shows.
