Comcast Pulls The Plug On G4 Reboot After Less Than A Year On Air

Well, that wasn’t long at all, G4. It was reported Sunday night that Comcast is shutting down the revived gaming-focused network. It had been only 11 months since the relaunch came off of 8-ish years off the air.

Deadline obtained a memo, from a yet-to-be-revealed source, from Comcast Spectacor CEO Dave Scott intended for the network’s employees. Comcast Spectacor is the division of the company that was in charge of running G4. The problem with obtaining and making public an unreleased memo is that the people it was intended for end up learning they’re losing their jobs from discussions on Twitter. Jirard Khalil aka The Completionist and Louis Dorman learn from the same Wario64 tweet. Austin Creed, who is also WWE wrestler Xavier Woods, and Xplay producer Emily Rose both find out the news while on flights, the latter on her way home from her grandfather’s funeral.

Comcast said it will assist the 45 laid-off staff with outplacement and consider some for opportunities elsewhere in the company. Scott explained that the company’s investment and revival efforts just didn’t have the momentum they desired, citing low viewership. The modern iteration of G4 was announced in July 2020 through reactivated Twitter accounts. The linear channel’s official relaunch occurred on November 16, 2021, available on Verizon FiOS, Cox, and Xfinity. The brand has YouTube and Twitch channels, as well as the Pluto TV channel G4 Selects.

The end comes after network president Russell Arons exited in August. Further exits included X-Play host Indiana “Froskurinn” Black and Attack of the Show! host Kevin Pereira, which had followed layoffs of more than 20 crucial crew members. The crew of Arena had quit last week. Internal communications had apparently been shuttered and operations had been “suspended” for just the weekend. Farewell G4, you tried, even if it was with the same company that killed you in the first place.
