Dave Filoni called Darth Maul “a character that's our responsibility” and says ways of continuing his story have been under discussion at Lucasfilm for a while now. To continue Maul’s storyline post- The Clone Wars, and in shows like Star Wars Rebels and now, Maul - Shadow Lord, Filoni had discussions with George Lucas. Shadow Lord brings to life much of what Lucas envisioned for the character before he sold Lucasfilm to Disney. Filoni reveals, “George and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been. And so I felt it was a way of honoring that future that we were going to have and finally bringing some of it to light.”
Maul - Shadow Lord will show the Sith Lord taking an apprentice named Devon Izara. George Lucas had plans for Maul to have an apprentice named Darth Talon, a red Twi’Lek who would’ve played a role with Maul in the events of the sequel trilogy. Fans will soon see how Filoni and the brilliant creative team behind the new animated series have integrated George Lucas’s plans for Maul in the new series. Everyone knows how Maul’s story ends in Star Wars Rebels, but this series will attempt to fill in a few more gaps. How will this impact the future of Star Wars, and will Maul’s new apprentice, Devon Izara, be significant in the New Republic or sequel trilogy era? These are questions time will answer. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord premieres April 6 on Disney+.
