A name has been added to the ever-growing list of 1,000 individuals being laid off across the board at the Walt Disney Company. According to The Beat, David Gabriel, Senior Vice President of Print, Sales, and Marketing for Marvel, has reportedly been let go. He had been with Marvel for 23 years, advancing to SVP of marketing. Gabriel’s tenure was marked by overall success, with Marvel maintaining its number one position in comic sales for many years. Despite recent declining sales, Gabriel has been described as extremely talented in his field, and the question of how Disney will fill his shoes hangs heavily.
Marketing seems to be a targeted division at the company. In a memo to employees, Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro stated (via The Alternative Press), “Over the past several months, we have looked at ways in which we can streamline our operations in various parts of the company to ensure we deliver the world-class creativity and innovation our fans value and expect from Disney. Given the fast-moving pace of our industries, this requires us to constantly assess how to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs.” All names of those being let go have not been confirmed at this time, but it is far-reaching.
