DC is going in a new direction with its upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns. The murder-mystery drama focuses on Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, training the newest Lantern, John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. A new trailer gave audiences a sneak peek at the show's tone. The trailer opens with the pair driving off a cliff. Hal abandons John, forcing him to use his Green Lantern powers. Shortly after, the trailer shows Hal detecting that something is off, and the pair walk into the town hall. A small town sheriff, Kerry, portrayed by Kelly Macdonald, makes it clear that it’s her town, and Hal and his friend should stay out of her way.
Outside of the darker tones, the series still makes reference to the more playful side of the comic inspiration. When John asks Hal if he’s talked to any of the other lanterns, he denies it since they’re all aliens and one is a squirrel. Other cast members include Nathan Fillion reprising his Guy Gardner role from Superman, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette Stewart, and Jason Ritter as Billy Macon. Rounding out the cast are Sherman Augustus as John Stwart Sr., Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders, Cary Christopher as Noah, and Laura Linney and Paula Patton in unknown roles. The series hits HBO Max in August. The full trailer can be viewed below. Lanterns includes strong language, so viewer discretion is advised.
