If you spend any time on social media in Star Wars-centric circles, you’re likely to come across some doubt and skepticism about the franchise. That mentality is pervasive. It primes people to anticipate a bad showing for new things to join the roster. It colors the press about it, too. There was a lackluster outlook on The Mandalorian & Grogu after the Super Bowl spot.

It looks like that pessimistic outlook online did not quite translate to the real world. The latest installment in the Star Wars movie roster, The Mandalorian & Grogu, seems to have succeeded in its first opening weekend. Despite a low critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is much better, with over an 89%. It’s one of, and currently the best, audience scores in the franchise. After a rough opening by Friday of nearly $30 million, it got a welcome boost from walk-up sales on Saturday and Sunday, bringing its global haul to around $165 million, which just about brings it to its budget.

It’s playing really well with male viewers under the age of 13, earning a 5/5 on PostTrak, an exit polling service, and an A on CinemaScore. It’s also scoring well with parents. Disney seems to be banking on it being a family-friendly film and hopes it has long legs that should be encouraged by the high audience scores. It’s playing in a variety of formats, which should help its appeal as well.
