Star Wars has forever changed and influenced pop culture. Mark Hamill’s character, Luke Skywalker, is an icon of the franchise, a powerful Jedi who has helped free the galaxy from oppression multiple times. While that impact is invaluable, it shouldn’t be a weight that restricts the storytelling. With how expansive the galaxy is, there are plenty of new avenues to explore, and it seems like Hamill agrees. In an interview with ComicBook, the actor discussed his stance on the subject.

The actor expressed gratitude to George Lucas, calling back to when they made the original trilogy, “I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the days, the humble days when George called Star Wars ‘the most expensive low-budget movie ever made. We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that.” He continued, “But my view is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”

Hamill wrapped up his comments with a humorous statement, “And by the way, when I disappeared in [The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind. And there’s no way I’m gonna appear as a naked Force ghost. I’m just letting you know that right now.” Hamill is pretty much done with his role as the Jedi and looks toward a future focusing on new stories. It may not be the last time we see Luke as a character though if it fits in the timeline, since CGI was used to create a younger-looking Luke for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

The next film to feature Rey and be set post-Episode IX is currently titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Plot specificities are being kept under wraps, but the film will continue Rey’s story, about 15 years later, as the franchise transitions to a post-Skywalker Saga era.  Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct the film, and George Nolfi is set to write it. A release window has not been named.
