'El Maestro' Is Diego Luna's Next Directorial Project

Diego Luna is going from that galaxy far, far away to the director’s chair once again! Nexus Point News has broken the story that Diego Luna will direct his 5th feature film El Maestro!

El Maestro is being developed as a Spanish-language film and will be produced by Prowler Pictures. Plot details are currently unknown, which hints that the film being Luna’s biggest as a filmmaker yet. In addition to directing, Luna co-wrote the screenplay with Diego Rabasa, who also co-wrote Luna’s recent directorial effort Ashes. Production is expected to begin sometime in Canada in 2027 with a possible release in 2028. El Maestro will be Diego Luna’s 5th film as a director following the Mexican dramedy, Abel, the historical biopic Cesar Chavez, the road trip comedy Mr. Pig, and the coming-of-age drama Ashes. Luna has also directed episodes of Back Home and Everything Will Be Fine.

Diego Luna broke out in the early 2000s, alongside frequent collaborator and real-life friend Gael Garcia Bernal, in Alfonso Cuarón’s acclaimed coming-of-age film Y tu mamá también. Afterward, he starred in films such Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal, Milk, The Book of Life, and If Beale Street Could Talk. In 2016, Luna grew to international prominence with the role of Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While the character and Luna’s performance received mixed reception from critics, it was deemed a major win for on-screen diversity in Star Wars by fans. While Jimmy Smits (Bail Organa) and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) had already appeared in the franchise, Luna’s performance was notable for keeping his authentic Mexican accent in the film. Luna earned a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing Cassian. On television, Luna is best known for playing the lead role Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Narcos: Mexico, Andy Lujan in La Máquina, and reprised his eponymous role in Andor. His work on all three series (especially Andor) received widespread acclaim from critics and earned him multiple accolade nominations including Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Drama Series (Andor) and Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film (La Máquina).
