ElevenLabs has partnered with Stan Lee Universe to bring the Spider-Man and X-Men co-creator back to life through an AI-generated likeness in their Iconic Marketplace. ElevenLabs users are now able to generate his likeness as a comic book character or use his voice to narrate any book on the app. The company is even launching a Stan Lee Book Club of the Month, starting with the AI Stan Lee reading Treasure Island for June. ElevenLabs has already acquired the rights to use other performers' likenesses, including Judy Garland, Burt Reynolds, Michael Caine, David Hassehoff, Albert Einstein. In a separate deal Val Kilmer’s estate permitted his AI likeness to star in the upcoming film As Deep As The Grave.
While the use of AI performers is still highly controversial, Stan Lee Universe saw it as a way to carry on his legacy. Chaz Rainer, a lawyer and board member for the estate explained, “Stan always believed in meeting his fans where they were: in the pages of a comic, at a convention, or in a quick on-screen cameo.” He continued, “This partnership is a way of continuing that. Fans have always told us that when they read his comics, they hear the words in Stan’s voice, and now, thanks to ElevenLabs, we can make that a reality.” One day this technology may be able to bring Stan Lee cameos back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
