There have been rumors, and even some confirmation, on the potential for an Xbox handheld console for about a year now. Phil Spencer himself confirmed they are working on a handheld device, but he said it’s years away.

Now, photos have leaked about a possible ASUS ROG Ally 2 handheld, complete with FCC (Federal Communications Commission) filings. What makes this a possible Xbox handheld (But maybe not the official one?) is in the upper left corner. In the pictures posted on X, there’s a small trapezoid-shaped button just next to the left joystick. On the black cased device, if you look closely, the Xbox logo can be seen, but it looks like it is blacked out with a Sharpie. On the white cased device, that button is clearly covered with a black sticker. If you look closely at the White cased device as well, the diamond-grouped buttons on the right are clearly in the style and color of Xbox controllers.

Now, this may not be the official Xbox handheld, as we would have to take Spencer at his word and believe that that device is years away. However, it’s entirely plausible, especially with Xbox’s “play anywhere” approach these days, that a third-party device like the ASUS ROG Ally 2 could come branded with the Xbox logo and button, and operate Xbox games.

Windows Central reported on something called Project Kennan, which they corroborated through The Verge and confirmed that it is an Xbox licensed handheld built buy ASUS. All of this is still speculation until something is confirmed, and they did clarify that these devices are Windows PCs, and not necessarily Xbox handheld consoles. But, again, with Xbox’s Play Anywhere cloud gaming, you could still play some Xbox games on the device. It’s just not clear which ones.
