John Grover, the legendary British film editor, passed away September 28 at age 87. He worked on countless films and TV shows, but most fans remember him for his work on the James Bond films, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. His death was announced on Instagram by the British Film Editors Organization, but a cause of death was not mentioned. He served as film editor on three of the Bond films: For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, and License to Kill. He cut three other Bond films: The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, and Octopussy. Grover also worked on war films, The Wild Geese and The Sea Wolves, which starred James Bond actor Roger Moore.
Along with his long list of film credits, he also worked on TV shows such as CI5: The New Professionals and Fat Friends in the UK along with American TV movies such as Nobody’s Children and Frankenstein. His final film was a 2005 Lithuanian drama Dievu Miskas (Forest of the Gods).
He was born on October 24, 1938, in Barnet, Middlesex, England, UK. He began his career as an uncredited assistant editor on films like The Haunting, Grand Prix, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Doctor Zhivago. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jenny; son, Tim; daughter, Camilla; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
