The finale of IT: Welcome to Derry far exceeded everyone’s expectations and packed an emotional punch. The series proved that it’s here to stay, not just as a treat for horror enthusiasts, but for fans of television in general. The season 1 finale featured moments that had fans choked up, and a few that made them stand up and cheer. The main creative forces behind the series, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, provided insight into the making of the show’s foggy and misty finale, which brought together the entire cast to face off against Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise. It wasn’t only fans who wanted their questions about Pennywise to be answered this season, but the Muschiettis and Fuchs as well. Fuchs said, “There were certain mysteries that had to be answered. Why does It remain in Derry? Well, now we know: he is trapped there within the cage assembled by the Children of Maturin centuries ago. Why does It choose the form of Pennywise? We know that now, too: it’s a real-life clown that the entity encountered in 1908.”

The show furthered the twisted and tragic story of Ingrid Kersh, who is Bob Gray’s daughter. Kersh was first introduced in IT: Chapter 2 when Pennywise took on an older form of her in a scene with the grown Beverly Marsh, played by Jessica Chastain. Andy Muschietti also revealed that creating the final sequence where Derry is engulfed in a mysterious and supernatural fog was the hardest aspect, as the entire sequence had to be filmed on a stage to keep the cast close together. The challenge was to ensure that audiences could keep up with where each character was in relation to the other, which was achieved by creating several little maps. The idea of the fog was “invented for the show” and done after conversations with Stephen King.

While the season answers many questions about Pennywise’s origins, it opens the door for further seasons and reveals that for Pennywise, yesterday, today, and tomorrow are all the same. The cosmic entity can travel back in time to undo the existence of certain characters, and he’s already aware of his death in the future. This is why he wanted to prevent Richie Tozier’s birth by killing his mother, Marge, because he knew Richie would play a crucial role in killing him in the future. Muschietti revealed that IT: Welcome to Derry is a story being told backwards because “Pennywise experiences time in a non-linear way. We sort of hinted at it at the end of the season.” Muschietti was a lot more forthcoming about what’s in store for Season 2, but Barbara Muschietti tried to make sure her brother didn’t reveal too much. Still, Muschietti did reveal that, “We can only say the stuff that’s already known, like it’s in 1935, 27 years before Season 1, and it involves the massacre of the Bradley Gang from the books. It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new characters and some characters from this season as well, but younger versions of them.” Based on this, fans can assume that IT will try to undo the existence of Marge’s parents, or the parents of any other characters who would prove to be his undoing many decades later.

Muschietti also revealed that he initially planned for several post-credit scenes and was very focused on making sure the series connects to the films. However, that became a bit difficult to pull off, so they settled on bringing Sophia Lillis back as Beverly Marsh for a post-credits scene that also features Ingrid Kersh actress Joan Gregson. She passed away at the age of 91, only two months after filming her scenes for the series. Season 2 of IT: Welcome to Derry has not been officially greenlit by HBO Max, which may be related toNetflix's acquisition of Warner Bros. However, the final two episodes have ratings of 9.4/10 and 9.5/10, respectively, on IMDb. IT: Welcome to Derry is streaming on HBO Max.
