Shortly after James Gunn joined DC, Peter Safran announced ten films, including one based on The Authority. In an interview at the time, Safran explained the premise, “It isn’t just a story of heroes and villains, and not every movie and TV show is going to be about good guy versus bad guy,” Gunn said at the time. “There are people that are very questionable, like the Authority, who basically believe that you can’t fix the world in an easy manner, and they take things into their own hands.” The Authority debuted in a 1992 comic book and included characters like Swift, Midnighter, The Doctor, the Engineer, and Jack Hawksmoor. Unfortunately, the film has been cancelled.

Gunn took to Threads to share the news with fans. He wrote, “The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.” Last year, Gunn shared concerns that The Authority would be difficult to achieve after similar projects like The Boys were released. There’s also the issue of bringing characters together in the DCU, leaving limited resources for projects like The Authority. However, DC still has plenty of movies down the pipeline. Supergirl is set to release this June and a Clayface movie is coming later along with a Superman and Lex Luthor team-up film called Man of Tomorrow. Gunn also confirmed that The Brave and the Bold and Booster Gold are in development.
