Jimothy The Raccoon Goes Viral

The viral sensation of the summer is here, and it has a name:
JIMOTHY.
Who is Jimothy, you ask?
Jimothy is a raccoon, native to the city of Seattle. He’s been around since at least 2025; footage has been posted on the internet of what seemed to be a baby Jimothy and his mom and siblings, running around the Ballard neighbourhood of Seattle.
Jimothy’s advantage is that he is cute and he stands out, much like viral sensations Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo, and Tasmania’s Neal the Seal. Jimothy stands out because of his looks; footage shared on Instagram by Seattle resident Kiana Hall shows a spindly-shaped ball of grey, white, and black fur scampering around and doing his thing. Hall’s post also gave him his name; she said he just “looks like a Jimothy.”

Note: It is not known for sure if Jimothy’s stature is caused by the condition called short spine syndrome, but that is what the internet seems to be running with.
Since it was first posted in mid-July, the reel has spread- it has over 8 million views as of Friday, July 24th.
Jimothy has gone viral thanks to the tradition of being two things- he is a very shareable and unusual critter. He is also part of an inevitable trend: as cities expand, waste will increase, and encounters between humans and the animals we affectionately call ‘trash pandas’ will inevitably increase as well. But not all of them will impact humanity in such a way that they inspire Google animations, generate products like meme coins and t-shirts, and appear in game worlds like those of Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft.

There is another trend, though, that we all must pay heed to, no matter how adorable the creature: they are just that, wild creatures, and we need to respect their privacy and safety. We also need to think of ourselves; wild animals can often be a vector for serious illnesses, like rabies.
Bottom line? As long as we can give Jimothy the respect he deserves as a living creature, he can be our little gremlin forever.
