An animated Netflix film about three K-Pop superstars and secret demon hunters in-between rehearsals and concert performances had an outlandish premise no one predicted it would become an international sensation.
Before its many award nominations, K-Pop Demon Hunters was Netflix’s most popular original film and its soundtrack taking over streaming and radio music charts. With the arrival of award season, K-Pop Demon Hunters has shown its story, beautiful animation, and characters garnered the attention of the award committee of the L.A. branch of the International Animated Film Association.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans’s animated musical “swept awards” by winning best direction, best music, best writing, best editorial and best voice acting for Arden Cho, the voice of Rumi. K-Pop Demon Hunters also won awards for technical categories at the Annies, such as best FX, best character animation, best character design and best production design. Not too shabby considering the little promotion and advertising the film was given and received before its worldwide release during the summer of 2025.

Given how the Annie Awards gave attention and acclaim to other films such as The Wild Robot and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the inclusion of K-Pop Demon Hunters into the ranks of Best Feature, Best FX, Best Character Animation, and Best Character Design just to name a few highlights greatness coming from seemingly “out of nowhere”. Maddie Kang’s film was more than three girls singing to amass love from their fans. At its core, these three girls built a family, overcame their insecurities, and gained the strength to be more than the sum of their individual parts. Getting in touch with their culture and history made them stronger than the previous demon hunters before them and resulted in them being a sensation not just on screen, but in the hearts of millions of people. Every award earned was definitely deserved.
