Plans to bring Minecraft to the screen date back to 2012, when Mojan was pitched with the idea for a TV series but declined the offer. In 2014, Markus Persson (the creator of Minecraft) shut down a Kickstarter project that was trying to fund a Minecraft movie due to lacking a licensing agreement. In the same year, Mojan started negotiations with Warner Bros for a feature film, which could hit theatres in 2018. Over the years, several writers and directors like Shawn Levy or Rob McElhenney were attached to the project. Initially planned as an animated film, the concept later changed to live-action.

After years of delay, the movie has now finally gone before the cameras in New Zealand. Written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer and directed by Jarred Hess (Napoleon DynamiteNacho Libre) the general premise is that a teenage girl and a group of adventurers must protect the Overworld from the Ender Dragon.

The Minecraft movie is currently set for a release on April 4, 2025.
