Paramount has announced that the animated continuation of the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender series will air on their streaming platform, Paramount+, instead of being released theatrically as originally planned. The latest entry in the long-running franchise, Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender (working title), was originally planned for an October 9, 2026 theatrical release date. However, it is now scheduled for a fall 2026 release on Paramount+.
The release of the animated film will also coincide with the release of a new Avatar animated series, Avatar: Seven Havens. The new film and series add to a franchise that includes Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008), the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (2010) live action film, the spin-off series, The Legend of Korra (2012-2014), and the currently running Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series (2024).
The studio has not publicly provided a reason for its decision to move Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender from its relatively skimpy 2026 theatrical release schedule; however, Jane Wiseman, the head of originals for Paramount Studios, has issued the following statement:
“The Avatar Universe has captivated audiences for two decades, and Paramount+ is proud to be the exclusive streaming home for its beloved animated incarnation,” said Jane Wiseman, head of originals for Paramount+. “‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ and ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ represent the next evolution of storytelling from Avatar Studios — bringing together remarkable talent both in front of and behind the camera to deliver the epic adventures and emotional depth fans have come to expect. These additions, alongside ‘The Legend of Korra’ and the original series, solidify Paramount+ as the destination for the animated Avatar Universe.”
