Mads Mikkelsen didn’t only play the scientist who designed the Death Star in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but he also likes to believe he’s an expert on building them in real life, too. Mikkelsen, who played Jyn Erso’s father, the brilliant scientist, Galen Erso, told Variety about the time he helped his brother, Lars, to build a LEGO Death Star for Christmas. Mads revealed:
“At Christmas, my brother was there. And he’s a big LEGO fan. And somebody had given him the Death Star. For some odd reason, he just left the table and started building it…And he was struggling. And then it hit me: I can help out, because I created the Death Star in Rogue One." Mads’s brother, Lars, voiced Grand Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels and played the live-action version of Thrawn in Ahsoka. Lars will reprise his role as Thrawn in Ahsoka Season 2 and more projects set in the Mandalorian era. Considering Thrawn and Erso’s ties to the Empire, the Death Star was a great gift for Lars, but Mads is the real expert in the family.

Aware that the Empire had sinister plans for the Death Star, Galen Erso took his wife and daughter to live as farmers on Lah’mu. Following a few years of peace, Galen was tracked down by his former friend, Director Orson Krennic, who forced him out of exile to complete the Death Star. His wife was shot dead at the spot, and he was separated from Jyn, who was raised by Saw Gerrera. However, Galen got his revenge by building a fatal flaw into the superweapon that he revealed in a message to Jyn. Mikkelsen also revealed that the script for Rogue One remained incomplete. Several changes were made to it during filming, but ultimately, he’s pleased with the way the movie turned out. Mads’ brother Lars Mikkelsen will grace Star Wars fans with his presence in Ahsoka Season 2, which streams next year on Disney+.
