Monk Gyatso's Mysterious Past Will Be Explored In 'Avatar, The Last Airbender: The Reckoning Of Roku'

Avatar: The Last Airbender captured the hearts of fans with its compelling story. Since then, the creators have released comics that continued the story and a sequel series focused on Avatar Korra. Despite the expanding story, fans have been clamoring to learn about the past and the mysterious Avatars before Aang. F. C. Yee obliged these fans with a series of four young adult books that revealed the journeys of Avatar Kyoshi and Avatar Yangchen.
Now, Yee has recruited Randy Ribay to pen the story of Avatar Roku, the Avatar directly before Aang, which means some characters may have met both of them. The official description for The Reckoning of Roku reads:
“A young Avatar Roku has only just commenced his training at the Southern Air Temple when his erstwhile friend, Prince Sozin, requests his aid in preventing the Earth Kingdom from claiming a remote Fire Nation island. Despite his inexperience, Avatar Roku slips away with the help of an irritating young Airbender named Gyatso. As the reluctant companions delve deeper into their wayward mission, they begin to realize that even greater threats lie ahead. Plagued by self-doubt but eager to prove himself, Roku fights for his life and the lives of others while ensuring that the hidden secret of the island doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. This searing fifth installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series explores the beginning of Roku’s journey from privileged Fire Nation noble to the powerful but indecisive Avatar whose hesitancy may ultimately pave the way for the Hundred Year War.”

This book looks set up to reveal not only Roku’s past, but also Gyatso’s. Gyatso has been a fan-favorite for his tender treatment of Aang and evidence of fighting off the Fire Nation invasion. Kyoshi and Yangchen received two books each to tell their stories, so a second Roku book is expected. In a scene in the original animated series, Aang speaks to these three Avatars for advice about defeating the Fire Lord. Yee managed to flesh out their sparse words into thrilling and suspenseful stories that are canon to the series. If Ribay follows that trend, readers will find themselves encountering the same world that Aang would discover before he disappeared for the next hundred years.
