Michael Culver, 'Star Wars' Actor Passes Away At 85

Michael John Edward Culver, best known for his role as Imperial Officer, Captain Needa in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, passed away at 85. The cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.
Culver was born in Hampstead, London, on June 16, 1938, and died on February 27, 2024. In addition to his role in Star Wars, the British actor and antiwar activist's television and filmography includes Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Secret Army, Thunderball, The Avengers, Goodbye Mr. Chips, From Russia With Love, The Adventures of Black Beauty, Squadron, Cadfel, and Wallander.

While his role as Captain Needa was small in The Empire Strikes Back, the impact of his character, particularly his death at Darth Vader’s hands, is not only one of the most memorable scenes in the franchise but a fan favorite as well. Knowing he had failed Vader in locating the small group of rebels, he apologized profusely. Vader promptly force-choked him but did let him know his “Apology [was] Accepted.”
Alliance Agents, who represented Culver for the last ten years, released a statement honoring the actor’s 50 years in the industry, “It's been an honor to have represented Michael for the last decade and to have taken him to some of the best Star Wars events in the UK and Europe. A real highlight was taking Michael to Celebration in Chicago in 2019. He was lost for words when he saw his queue line with nearly 200 people waiting to see him.”
