Fan edits of trailers are always enjoyable, with this modern take on The Empire Strikes Back being a rather good one. Made by Floris De Canne and posted to YouTube, this fan has created a trailer that brings the chills.

The trailer’s focus might be on Luke, but that is mainly told through the audio as the Emperor talks about the growing disturbance in the Force and Obi-Wan says he will be tempted by the dark side. Through the visuals, the battle of Hoth is the focus, with the confrontation between Luke and Vader on Bespin teased. Lando is shown in a brief shot that does nothing to reveal whether he is a friend or foe to our heroes.

And while Dagobah is shown, Yoda is noticeably absent. And that’s despite the perfect opportunity for at least his voice at the end after Luke’s line, “I’m not afraid.” De Canne had a reason for that, as told in the pinned comment. “I really didn’t want to spoil Yoda. I already teased the Emperor and thought that was enough new characters teased.”

The trailer does work without Yoda’s “You will be…” line. While it might have been great to hear it, what De Canne says is true. If this was a trailer for a new film, you already have the mystique of who this new voice speaking is. A voice of the dark side. As well as the allegiance of the person our heroes encounter on the cloud city. Yoda just doesn’t fit here. His presence would be better suited to a trailer of his own.

It is a perfectly edited trailer that sells the film’s tone. This isn’t the only modern trailer of the Star Wars saga De Canne has created, with versions for all the original trilogy films and two of the three prequel films. They have also made a trailer for the entire Skywalker Saga. Well worth a watch.
