To Miami we go! The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled tons of new details about Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Miami Vice film.

The film will be a period piece set in the 1980s and will be titled Miami Vice ‘85. And after months of rumors and semi-denials, Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan have officially signed on to play Detectives James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, respectively. Butler follows in the footsteps of Don Johnson and Colin Farrell, while Jordan follows in the footsteps of Philip Michael Thomas and Jamie Foxx. In addition to director Joseph Kosinski, other confirmed crew members include screenwriter Drew Pearce and cinematographer Claudio Miranda.

Joseph Kosinski has become one of the most reliable blockbuster filmmakers in the game, ever since he made his directorial debut with Tron: Legacy in 2010. Kosinski’s most recent films, Top Gun: Maverick and F1, received highly positive reviews, box-office success, and a combined 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. After hitting it big with Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Austin Butler has recently delivered acclaimed performances in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing. Michael B. Jordan is coming off an Oscar-winning performance in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, and he is currently in post-production on his sophomore directorial effort, The Thomas Crown Affair, which is due for release next year.

Miami Vice ‘85 rides into theaters on August 6th, 2027.
