One of the film industry’s most exciting filmmakers is about to get a whole lot weirder. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Neon Productions (the distributor behind acclaimed hits such as Parasite, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Anora) is teaming up with filmmaker Matt Johnson on his next film, which is currently only known as Untitled Matt Johnson Film. Finn Wolfhard is set to star. The film is set to be about a former Vice editor who got busted for running a cocaine smuggling operation. Wolfhard is set to play the journalist who uncovered the story.
Matt Johnson is best known for co-creating, co-starring, co-writing, and co-directing Nirvana the Band the Show alongside Jay McCarrol, as well as its feature film spin-off that was released back in February. He is also known for the found footage films The Dirties (2013) and Operation Avalanche (2016). In 2023, Johnson directed his breakout feature, BlackBerry, which starred Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton. The film received universal critical acclaim and received 17 Canadian Screen Award nominations (the most of any film in the ceremony’s history) and won 14, including Best Director and Best Picture. Johnson’s next film is the upcoming Tony, a biopic about legendary celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. The film, starring Dominic Sessa, Emelia Jones, and Antonio Banderas, will be distributed by A24 and is set for release this August. Johnson is also attached to an upcoming Magic: The Gathering film adaptation.
