Netflix CEOs Say They Have Never Cancelled A Successful Show

In the golden days of television, a show was successful if it achieved the loyalty of an audience and longevity on a network. Now that streaming services are direct competitors to network television, the story's quality, and the audience's size matters as much as the budget spent on the production. This new truth is known to Netflix CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, as is proven by their most recent statement that the giant built on binge-watching has never cancelled a successful show. The news was shocking because it was made after Netflix cancelled several shows that could be easily considered fan favorites. 

Both CEOs defended their decision by offering a simple business explanation and revealing much about the company's core beliefs. The size of the audience must be proportionate to the size of the budget. Small audiences are acceptable for small shows with a smaller budget but not for shows of larger scales. The men also explained that they wanted to produce performances that ranked high in quality within their respective genres.

Netflix's theoretical commitment to quality and subsequent cancellation of programs that both had an audience and great reviews has irritated Netflix subscribers to the point where #CancelNetflix began trending. The cancellations have either been after short-term airplay or so abrupt that shows are left on a cliffhanger. Subscribers are left asking if the CEOs of Netflix have a hidden agenda or have failed to recognize good authentic stories.
