Liko and Sprigatito have kicked off quite the adventure in the pilot for Pokémon Horizons: The Series. A new pocket monster has already been introduced to the mix! As reported by Serebii.net, this crystalline tortoise-like Pokémon interacted with the new protagonist and her Poké-partner in the pilot for the series. The Pokémon Company (via Polygon) said that “its name and true nature are shrouded in mystery.” They confirm that more information will be available on this new Pokémon when the Scarlet & Violet DLC comes out, likely during The Indigo Disk portion with Terapagos.

The little guy’s resemblance to a new Legendary Pokémon, Terapagos, is very prevalent. The baseline comparison lies in their respective shapes, both of which are reminiscent of a Galápagos tortoise. Their eye design is also a massive similarity, as well as the crystal shapes embedded in their foreheads.

The Pokémon Company describes this pocket monster as “small in stature and not particularly strong, but when push comes to shove, it can crystallize the energy in its body to form a protective shield.” They also explain that it can “assume a dormant state when it feels that its life is in danger by pulling its head, limbs, and tail into its shell and making itself look like a jewel.”

This wouldn’t be the first time the main protagonist of the anime has had an interaction with a possible Legendary. In the original pilot, Ash saw Ho-Oh flying by a rainbow after defending Pikachu, the first of several interactions with Legendaries. In Pokémon Origins, which focuses on Red’s progression to becoming one of the greatest Trainers ever, the character manages to catch Legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres to add their data to the Pokédex.

The first episode of Pokémon Horizons has recently aired in Japan, broadcasting on TV Tokyo Japan and local channels.  A release date for other platforms has not been announced, but it will likely drop on Netflix.
