Building out existing franchises seems to be the play lately for major studios, especially in the wake of major layoffs and a looming writer’s strike. HBO and George R. R. Martin’s relationship continues to grow with spin-offs of Game of Thrones. The Marvel and Star Wars universes are ever-expanding. Let’s not forget the growth in the cinematic world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

The future of Middle-earth is bright after today’s announcement by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Embracer Group, which recently acquired the rights to Middle-earth Enterprises. A multi-year deal has been struck between the two companies that include collaboration on multiple feature films based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Embracer Group addressed any concerns about the adaptation:

“We understand how cherished these works are, and working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we plan to honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values.”

The co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Film Group. Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy added:

“The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”

There is currently no word on what exactly these new films will entail. Although, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are working on a new anime feature film called The War of the Rohirrim, set nearly 200 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. In light of the success of Amazon Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, which owns the television rights for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, it is no surprise that Warner Bros. and New Line want to get in on the newfound popularity of Tolkien’s world.
