Once again proving that Darth Maul has gone from wasted potential to a staple of the Star Wars galaxy, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord has recently been announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan. “After the Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire,” says the official Star Wars website. Nothing else is known about the animation’s story at the time, though we can confirm that Sam Witwer is back as Maul, as he was present at the project’s announcement. This project will likely cover his time with the Crimson Dawn, and maybe even explore his relationship with Dryden Vos.

Maul first appeared in The Phantom Menace in 1999. His appearance, though relatively brief, was considered a highlight of the film even by its biggest detractors. This led to several appearances in the old Expanded Universe, which culminated in a story arc in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Though there was some initial apprehension over his “resurrection”, the story arc was overall a success. This led to several more appearances in the new EU, alongside a return to the films in Solo: A Star Wars Story. At this point, Maul’s momentum shows no signs of stopping.
