A recent Wall Street Journal feature on Pixar director Pete Docter revealed several upcoming projects, including a Monsters, Inc. 3 in early works. Despite the numbering, Monsters, Inc. never received a true sequel as Monsters University was a prequel. The closest thing to a sequel was the series of Disney+ shorts Monsters at Work. But that didn’t stop it from achieving popularity with an attraction at the Disney Parks and even a level in Kingdom Hearts 3. Pixar is focused on the sequels with the upcoming Toy Story 5, releasing this June, and a recently revealed Coco 2 in 2029 and Incredibles 3 in 2028. This sequel-heavy load comes as a result of original stories doing poorly in the box office.

However, Pixar hasn’t completely abandoned the originals. Slotter for next year is Gatto, a story about a thieving cat in Venice, along with Ono Ghost Market, inspired by Asian myths depicting interactions between the living and the dead meeting at supernatural bazaars. This was initially supposed to be a series but has since pivoted to become a film. Pixar is reportedly developing its first-ever musical, helmed by Turning Red director Domee Shi. No release dates have been announced for these originals yet but Pixar’s latest release, Hoppers, is currently in theaters.
