Coming off of his success with this year’s Sinners, director Ryan Coogler recently suggested that his next project will be a reboot of The X-Files. In an interview with Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler expressed anticipation for the reboot, saying that he’s “been excited for that for a long time” and that he’s “fired up to get back to it.”
A reboot of The X-Files has been rumored since 2023, when series creator Chris Carter revealed that he and Coogler had discussed reviving the show. The original supernatural detective drama, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, became a major success on Fox, running for nine seasons from 1993 to 2001 and again for two more seasons from 2016 to 2018. The series formed something of a cult following, with dedicated fans asking for more from the show ever since.
Coogler has celebrated in recent years for both critical and commercial successes like the Rocky spin-off Creed and Marvel’s Black Panther, the only MCU film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He confirmed that he has spoken with Gillian Anderson, who is hopeful to be involved in the reboot. Anderson, currently expected to star in Tron: Ares later this year, had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of her character in the 2016 revival.
His latest release, Sinners, is a vampire thriller that has recently received widespread acclaim. Coogler’s success delving into the horror genre suggests that he may be ready to take on the new series, which Coogler himself suggests “will be really f***ing scary.”
