As we enter the new year, 2023, fans of the Star Wars franchise have not seen any theatrical releases since 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker. 2022 was successful on the streaming front with Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett and Tales of the Jedi all of which have kept the Star Wars itch scratched. Being able to see a film in a theatre is what fans want. Thankfully Shawn Levy has let everyone know he is ready for his movie but we may be in for a bit of a wait.

Towards the end of 2022, sources confirmed that Canadian filmmaker, Shawn Levy was tasked with coming up with a new film in the Star Wars franchise. He has seen multiple hits over the last few years with genre movies like Free Guy, the Night of the Museum franchise and The Adam Project. Now Levy has confirmed he is ready after he finishes up with the last season of Stranger Things as well as getting into production on Marvel’s Deadpool 3. And while that is great news, Lucasfilm has Kevin Feige’s project and Taiki Waititi’s film coming with tentative release dates set for December 2025 and 2027 so who knows when we will get Levy’s movie.

“We’re in pretty early development still,” Levy said, “my goal is to make a Star Wars movie that is like a lot of my movies, which is visual spectacle and a healthy dose of wish fulfillment, levity and big heart.” And certainly, Lucasfilm has tapped the right guy to bring a healthy balance of action, humour and story. The Night of the Museum franchise is the benchmark to show Levy’s capability to hit on those targets and the fact he gets a chance to show his adult comic book side in Deadpool 3 will only further enhance his abilities.
